Our new workforce development program, made possible with the support of Illinois State Senator Lisa Hernandez, will provide high school students and young adults with introductory training for careers as Community Health Workers (CHW). Our primary focus will be connecting 1st and 2nd generation Latinx residents in our community with health care systems. CHWs share the ethnicity, language, socioeconomic status, and life experience with residents. CHWs offer interpretation and translation services, provide culturally appropriate health education information, give guidance on health behaviors, and advocate for community health needs. CHW training will be provided by University of Illinois Chicago’s CHW Connect. The workforce development program will also provide students with an introduction to careers in the arts and entrepreneurship, resume building, interview skills, stipends and job placement.
